He’s big, green, grumpy and just wants to be left alone in his swamp, but when trouble comes to the Kingdom of Duloc, Shrek the ogre reluctantly answers the call.
Shrek The Musical, based on the popular DreamWorks movie, comes to Pentacle Theatre March 3-25. It features a cast of 33 and is directed by Robert Salberg.
“Shrek fans will love this musical version of the story more than the films it’s based on,” said Salberg.
“There’s the DreamWorks films and there’s the live Netflix musical, but this updated version includes massive changes and improvements,” he said.
“For a contemporary musical, where context is everything, there are a lot of songs you will leave the theater singing,” said Salberg. “The music enhances the story. There are great melodies, toe-tapping rhythms, brilliant word play, plus everybody’s favorite ending number from the original film, ‘I’m a Believer,’ by The Monkees.”
Salberg says patrons are going to be surprised and delighted to see special makeup and character prosthetics designed by former Hollywood makeup artist Scott Ramp. “It’s the best makeup I’ve seen in 20 years at Pentacle,” Salberg added. “The makeup alone is worth the price of admission to see.”
A diverse range of actors, ages, ethnicities and genders comprise the cast of 33 actors, and most play several different characters in the story.
